Joe Tamburino Joins John Hines on WCCO to Discuss Rising Violence

As a noted criminal defense attorney and Chair of the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association, our firm partner Joe Tamburino is regularly asked to share his opinion on evolving legal situations throughout the Minneapolis metropolitan area. Recently, he was asked to join radio host John Hines on WCCO to discuss the rise in violence on Hennepin Avenue which frequently is tied to sports and other events happening in the area.

After the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Enzo Herrara at a local sports arena, many community leaders have demanded greater oversight from the police during raucous sports events. On the radio show, Attorney Tamburino argues that the Minneapolis police need better resources and assistance from the city: “Right now, we don’t have enough police officers patrolling downtown… The City Council needs to step up to the plate and support our police department.”

Attorney Tamburino also notes that many popular businesses and shops on Hennepin Avenue have been forced to close their doors in the wake of rising violence, citing vandalism and crime as the main reasons for moving their business. “Patrons would park in the parking lot, and cars would get broken into, a couple of [patrons] got assaulted: That is just not the way a first-class city should operate.”

Because the City Council has failed to increase policing across the board, the 911 response time in Minneapolis has decreased overall – and according to Attorney Tamburino, this is part of the reason for the dramatic uptick in violence around sports and other events. Time will only tell if these continuing issues will push the Minneapolis City Council to take action and protect its citizens.
